Do you like the idea of cruising down the river, with your rucksack stowed in the front of an open style Canadian canoe… that you have built yourself? Then read on!
Through this 4 day course you will build and use your very own Birch Ply Canoe. Either as an individual or a group of up to 3 friends/family, our instructors will provide you with all of the necessary materials and equipment to build your canoe, and teach you how to use it!
Our base for the course is a small workshop in the grounds of an old Railway Station. Here we begin the construction of the canoe immediately upon arrival on the first day, building the side panels and frame. Between working on the Canoe, there are opportunities for you to learn some Bushcraft skills, including lighting a fire and game preparation. In the evening there is a chance to sit around the campfire and unwind with our instructors.
On the second day we then begin to pull the canoe together, with lots of work going into sanding the panels and sealing the joints. We also continue to expand our Basic Bushcraft knowledge learning how to construct a shelter using a canoe and a basha, and we learn about water collection, filtration and purification.
On the third day it is back to finishing off the canoe construction before you put it to the test on the river running adjacent in the late afternoon. We spend the afternoon with you on the water developing and advancing your canoe technique.
After a final night at the campsite/workshop location we then head off and journey down river for the day. On our journey we will also look at navigation, from map and compass, to GPS, to natural navigation- using the sun, stars and indicators in the landscape. We break for lunch on the bankside and you will have the opportunity to prepare a light "wild" lunch, before we head back to the campsite where the course concludes mid afternoon.
The Canoe is yours to keep at the end of the course!
You can transport the canoe home yourself (the canoe will fit on the roof rack of even a small car), or Woodland Ways is happy to arrange transportation on your behalf at cost.
Alternatively- Woodland Ways is happy to market the sale of your Canoe where you can regain some of the cost back from your course!
Please note that accommodation is on a camping basis in the grounds of the workshop, here you will need to provide your own basic equipment, including food and drink. The workshops are located next to a busy railway line (all fenced off) and a quiet river (not all fenced off); therefore young adults should be supervised.
