The basics- interpreting the map within the landscape, understanding scales, calculating distances, providing 4 and 6 figure grid references, and setting the map to ground.Advanced- orientating the map to identify features, calculating magnetic and grid bearings, walking on a bearing, use of attack points, identification of hazards, use of handrails, relocation strategies, and probably the most important skill to learn of all… contour interpretation.
