Massai Warrior Expedition

This is a not for profit trip, all proceeds go directly to the village where woodland ways is helping to finance the building of a school.

Join the Desert Ways/Woodland Ways Team as we venture out to the Massai Mara to learn what it is like to be a Massai. The trip begins in Nairobi, where we are met by our massai hosts and transported into the hills to look down over the Rift Valley, home of the massai culture, during this time you will also be introduced to a number of traditionally used medicinal plants.

Following two nights in a guest house we are transported by 4x4 out to a massai village, via a traditional african market. This village is our home for the remainder of our stay. Upon arrival at your tented camp just outside the village you will meet the villages and they will help you build the traditional boma, an acacia fence to keep out the wildlife.

From day three through to day eleven we now remain with the villagers, as each day you immerse yourself in their traditions and culture. Each day has a theme, you will trek with the massai 7 kilometres to the nearest water hole to bring supplies back to the village, you will build the village a new massai hut to replace one which has come to the end of its life, (our way of saying thank you to the villagers), you will learn traditional friction fire lighting techniques, we will visit Lake Magadi, home of flamingos, you will make your own massai jewelry to take away with you, and we will visit the Ollogersallie prehistoric archaeological site which holds the largest collection of hominid hand axes and other tools dating back over 500 000 years.

Our time with the massai concludes following a foot safari learning tracking skills with a light humoured Massai Warrior competition on the last afternoon. This will include spear throwing, friction firelighting and a host of other fun games. We then feast on the last evening and celebrate with our host with traditional Massai Beer, before being entertained by the most amazing site you will ever see, a traditional Massai dance troop performing for you as the sun sets over the village.

This expedition is completely unique and will be a once in a lifetime chance to immerse yourself into the Massai culture. As with all our expeditions, your money goes directly into the village, supporting people who really need it, a helping to protect a way of life. We do not do middle men... all your support goes into the village, when we told them we would build them a house they're eyes lit up... this is what adventure travel is all about for us... we will see you in Kenya!
