IOL Fundamental Bushcraft Competency Training

Woodland Ways Training Course
Institute of Outdoor Learning
Fundamental Bushcraft Competency Certificate- Training

This course is an Institute for Outdoor Learning Approved Continual Proffessional Development Course and is designed for people who use/or wish to use bushcraft as an aide to delivering their own sessions at their own venues.

The training delivered on this course is designed to enable you to go for the IOL Fundamental Bushcraft Competency Award should you wish. The training does however surpass the basic requirements of the award. Run over 3 days at either our Oxfordshire woodland or your own venue (dependent on an assessment by Woodland Ways) you will be tought by some of the most knowledgeable instructors in the industry, that have been approved by the Institute for Outdoor Learning for their high standards of quality and safety.

The syllabus covers all the components included in the IOL Fundamental Bushcraft Competency Assessment plus additional supplementary topics to give the student a better grounding in basic bushcraft skills. After completion of the course students will agree with the instructors what further steps are required and the amount of consolidation that is needed to reach the assessment level.

Each topic will be described in detail, demonstrated and then students will get plenty of hands-on practical experience under the expert supervision of our instructors. The lead instructor on all our training courses will be an approved assessor of IOL for the Fundamental Bushcraft Competency assessments and any additional instructors will have passed the assessment themselves.

The course covers the following topics areas;

• Woodland as a renewable resource
• Basic tree identification and uses
• Edged Tools- including cutting techniques, tool selection and maintenance, knife law
• Safe use of edged tools
• Fire- Building a fire, fire lays and firewood selection, clearing up and "leave no trace”, ignition sources, tinder and tinder bundles
• Friction fire lighting – The Fire Bow - Including trouble shooting, making your own fire bow set
• Shelter- location, designs and frames, thatching, bedding, clearing away and "leave no trace”
• Water Sourcing, Collection & Purification

The course will start promptly at 9.00 am and finish at 17.30 on each of the three days. Students attending the course at our own venue are welcome to camp on site at £5 per person, alternatively we are happy to provide a list of local accommodation. Lunch, tea and coffee is provided at Oxford.

This course is ideal for outdoor instructors using bushcraft skills as part of their repertoire. Possession of the IOL FBC certificate demonstrates to customers a safe and competent ability to practice bushcraft.

This course is available to book privately for groups of 5 or more.

For individuals booking on our advertised dates= £300 per person
For group bookings on your own date of 5 to 10 persons = £300 per person
For group bookings on your own date of 10+ = £250 per person

We would ask all potential candidates to please note: there is a huge interest in bushcraft over the last few years, which has seen companies springing up offering you misleading bushcraft "Qualifications". We would ask candidates to note that it takes a minimum 18 months training, sometimes more, to become a woodland ways bushcraft instructor. This award does NOT constitute a Bushcraft Intructors Qualification, there is NO such thing on the market.

This course provides evidence to your employers, insurers, customers etc that you can deliver a basic bushcraft session safely and with an appropriate amount of knowledge and has become recognised as the benchmark for outdoor centres delivering basic bushcraft sessions (e.g. a 2 hour shelter building session for school children).

If you find yourself confused about what is available on the market to assist you in teaching bushcraft then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly give you an honest review... or you could look at our THE WOODLANDER COURSE if you want the highest skill set imaginable!
