A 3 season, windproof, breathable and exceptionally easy sleeping bag to get in and out off due to its front zip. This design makes the bag really handy for use within a hammock or basha/roll mat on the ground... we cannot understand why most companies do not do the front zip!
These bags have been designed for toughness and durability... using 44D Micro Rip Stop Tactel outer and liner, and further re-inforced around the boot area by 210D Nylon. The insulation properties are provided by Thermolite Extreme Insulation, designed by the inventors of Kavlar and Nomax. With ribs down the bag to ensure an even spread of insulation, and a baffle on the zip to prevent further heat loss.
From a further functionality point of view there are two pockets sown into the lining of the bag for items such as a mobile phone (prevent the batteries from draining by keeping them warm) or an easy to find headtorch.
The bag comes with a compression sack, and the insulation allows superior compression.
The bag comes in at a a wopping 220 x 80 x 50 cms but will pack down to a 25 x 14 x 14 cms.
The bag has an extreme temperature rating of -6c.
So what do our instructors think? Here Jason writes:
"I usually feel the cold and so used one of these bags out in the jungle as I was conscious that a down bag in damp conditions probably wouldn't be suitable and we were sleeping at altitude... I didn't need to worry about being warm... most nights I just wrapped myself into the bag as a duvet rather than a sleeping bag! I had one cold night at about 1500 metres and so I climbed into the bag and did the zip up, within minutes my body heat had warmed the bag and I was toasty, I liked the fit of the hood also. Just as a point of note... you are better off most of the time getting out of your clothes inside a good quality sleeping bag, your body heat then warms the bag and lets it do its work... it's a bit of a leap of faith when cold but it makes all the difference! When I came back to the UK I field tested on of these for a little while and I found them suitable for Spring-Autumn work, not having to worry about the cold at night"
Advantages: It folds down quite compact when you consider the insulative qualities of the bag, generally the warmer the bag the larger the stuff sack! It is also an affordable good quality bag. The best feature on this is the central zip, it makes life in the hammock so much more bearable.
Disadvantages: If you are looking to be outside throughout the 12 months of the year in the UK, or undertaking high altitude camping you may want to consider something warmer. Its a 3 season sleeping bag and does exactly what it is designed for.
