A less messy alternative to fire lighters.

This tinder is impregnated material, which when pulled apart shows its fibrous nature producing an excellent compliment to a fire steel. Once it is ignited it also burns very slowly, like a candle, providing you with plenty of time to get your fire started using more coarse tinder and kindling.

So what do our instructors think? Here Jo writes:

"If you are going to carry some form of tinder with you then you cannot go wrong with this piece of kit. I like the fact that this packs smaller than other common alternatives such as a tampon or cotton wool balls, and you get more burning time- it therefore takes up less space in your survival tin and you get more from it!"

Advantages: Its quick to light, will take a spark from your fire steel, and is a great alternative to the more traditional methods of using a tampon and only a small amount is required.Packs smaller than cotton wool balls. It also will not break up and make a mess as will some firelighters/gels. Also ideal for BBQ's.

Disadvantages: Well, its not a natural tinder that you will find whilst out and about and so you should learn how to use natural materials first and foremost, but having this stowed in the bottom of your rucksack will make fire lighting so much easier when you arrive tired at camp!
