Bushcraft is one of the most engaging activites for younger people available in the current age, whether they are working with fire, discovering wild foods, or tracking along the woodland ride, you will see eye's light up and an enthusiasm awaken that other activities just cannot bring.
 
We are one of the leading providers of Bushcraft and Survival training in the country and operate a range of activities for all ages at our two centres in Oxfordshire and Derbyshire. We deliver to schools, colleges, universities, home educators, youth groups, youth offending teams, and many other youth schemes.
 
 
We are happy to deliver courses to your establishment on an informal certified basis, if you would prefer acrreditation Woodland Ways is also a registered centre providing ASDAN accreddited short courses. These can be used as stand alone awards or as part of a progression route through to qualification such as CoPE or AoPE. We are also a registered centre for the Key Steps and Stepping Stones Programme. In 2011 we are launching a suit of Open College Network Bushcraft Qualifications also.
 
We are also able to deliver training and assessment for your teachers through the Institute for Outdoor Learnings Foundational Bushcraft Competency Award- the leading recognised award for teaching basic bushcraft skills to others.
 
Woodland Ways also has proven experience on designing and delivering to many schools through the Creative Partnerships Programme, working alongside other partners to deliver quality initiatives aimed to inspire young people and help them learn.

As recognised industry leaders we can provide your school or youth group with a quality bushcraft experience tailored to your exact needs and requirements.

From short workshops or demonstrations at your own venue to overnight courses at our centres, we have the experience and expertise of delivering to young people of all ages and from all backgrounds.

In addition we also offer more adventurous packages including once in a lifetime experiences with expeditions to Morocco, USA, Kenya and South Africa.

We are happy to spend the time to develop a program that exactly meets your needs with you. Or let us offer you one of our standard packages to make it easier for you!
 
If you wish we are happy to provide learning outcomes for the content of your selected package and we can map activities to the National Curriculum for a variety of subjects at each Key Stage if desirable.
 
Here are just some examples of how fire lighting can map to the National Curriculum for Science
 
Key Stage 1:
SC1: Gathering evidence by making observations. SC3: Properties of different woods. SC4:  On a fire bow pushes and pulls are examples of forces and the effect they have on the drill
 
Key stage 2:
SC1. Thinking creatively about how things work, SC3: The material properties of different woods, Changes that occur when things are heated, Burning wood results in the formation of new materials and is none reversible. SC4: Friction between the fire bow components, Forces and the direction they act.
 
Key stage 3:
SC2: Skeleton and antagonistic muscles involved in moving the fire bow. SC3: Minimising the effect of burning fossil fuel on the environment by using wood as a fuel. SC4: The way in which shaping the ends of the drill differently affects the friction at each end,  String on the drill applies a force causing the drill to rotate around a pivot, Relationship between force, area and pressure, Transfer and storage of energy.
 
Key Stage 4.
SC2: Evolution of modern humans relating to fire lighting and archaeological evidence. SC2: Sustainable development.
 
By working with you it will enable us to provide you with a "compelling learning experience”.
 
The very nature of what we do it will encourage team working, creative thinking, enquiry, self management and reflective learning, thus can facilitate implementation of "Personal, learning and thinking skills” (PLTS).
 
Bushcraft encompasses an endless range of topics. With each of the following disciplines there is a vast scope for study, which will be determined by your specific requirements in addition to the age of the students and the duration of session.
 
Fire; preparation, lighting, management and maintenance.
Water; sourcing, collection, purification.
Shelter; Requirements, positioning, construction, materials.
Food- edible wild plants, game preparation.
Primitive hunting techniques.
Campfire cooking.
Navigation; map & compass (to National Navigation Award Scheme – Silver Award level), GPS, natural navigation.
Tree Identification and uses.
Tracking and nature awareness.
Woodland Management; conservation, coppicing.
Crafts & Skills including;-
     Basketry,
     Cordage,
     Carving & Green woodworking,
     Hide and Leather Work,
     Flint Knapping.

Example Package:

Standard 1 Day Package for Children aged 10-14
(£35 per head for groups sizes over 15)
 
9.30 am Meet & Greet and Safety Brief
9.45am  Looking at the Woodland as a resource
10.00am Team shelter building using natural materials
11.30 am Tracking & Navigation Game to source water
12.30pm Lunch
13.30pm  Fire lighting: Demonstration of different techniques followed by team fire relay!
15.00pm Water collection and purification
15.45pm  Tree and Plant identification and uses
16.30pm  Finish
 

School Youth Group Bushcraft Activity

We can tailor a course to meet your requirements:

  • From a single session to a five day/four night residential course to overseas trips.
  • At our sites or yours (depending on suitability)
  • All age groups from Key Stage 1 through to adults
  • Group sizes from 5 to 150
  • Activities can be linked to the National Curriculum if you wish
  • Our instructors are experienced in working with young people from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities both in the UK and overseas.
