Basketry and bark work weekend

A weekend of basketry and harvesting, processing and crafting beautiful items from a range of tree barks.

This weekend course is running as a component part of our exclusive Primitive Skills Year course which looks at combining an exciting range of practical stone-age skills in a sequential 10 module package.

Here we are offering you the extra choice of simply cherry picking a singular module of this longer duration course and creating for yourself a focused look at exactly the skills you may wish to cover.

Our British woodlands are crammed with incredible natural materials that had huge significance for the lives of our ancestors and during this course you have the opportunity to craft several baskets, containers and utilitarian items that make life in the woods not just possible but pleasurable.

Initially we will look at familiarising you with the basics of weaving with willow where we guide you through making a simple round basket. We will use commercially acquired weaving willow but will cover with you how to go about harvesting natural alternatives from our woodlands. With a good grasp of several weaving styles and paterns we will progress onto forming a simple Cray fish pot.

We have specially granted permissions to fish the local water ways for the invasive Signal or Red Crayfish and on this we will guide you through the holistic process of making and using a Cray pot entirely from natural materials to humanely trap and dispatch this pest species.

You will leave the course fully educated in the best working guidelines for operating Cray trapping licenses and how to go about equipping yourself with the necessary gear and how to ensure it all conforms to current legislation surrounding the protection of other water/ wetland species.

Our instructors will be on hand to discuss the legalities of using cray fish traps and will point out the relevant authorities to consult should you wish to apply for your own license once you have some guided experience under your belt.

We will operate out of our stunning Oxfordshire woodlands from a rustic woodland camp where there will always be a kettle on for hot drinks. We will break for meals at 12:00 and 18:00 but activities will likely continue into the evening in keeping with our more specialist weekends gaining you the maximum opportunity to get hands on experience.

Our final subject area to guide you through is the sensitive acquisition of tree barks for weaving containers. Our woodlands boast a fantastic diversity of tree species and we you will be shown the different properties and methods of preparing each unique type of bark.

You will leave the course with a range of craft items and hopefully a lasting
impression of just how useful our woodlands have been to our species through our history and how useful they continue to be once you know where to look.

If you have any questions on any of the above please do get in touch.
