Basketry Day Course

Join our experienced instructors for the day as they guide you through the process of creating your own wicker basket.

During the day you will be coached through the various steps involved in producing a woven willow basket with the aim being that you take home your creation.

We will cover various types of weave, different starting patterns and how to effect a rim to your basket as well s looking at adding handles.

The morning will be spent bringing you up to speed on the anatomy and structure of the material you are using along with advice on where to source materials for weaving including alternative woodland/ hedgerow foraged materials.

Once you have created a base to your basket we progress into weaving the side walls before locking them in with a rim and finally a handle can be added. We aim to break for lunch between 12:30 and 13:00 in the afternoon.

We have run many willow weaving workshops over the years producing hundreds of fantastic baskets alongside our customers now we are offering a full day to get to grips with weaving and basketry.

Weaving with willow is a very satisfying craft and here you gain the opportunity to relax and learn at one of our stunning woodland venues around the camp fire.

We operate from a basic woodland venue with rustic furniture around the camp fire so do feel free to bring along additional items for your comfort throughout the day and download our recommended kit list for additional advice.

There will be hot and cold water for drinks and a base camp style toilet for your comfort. This is a non catered course and so you will need to bring along a packed lunch and snacks.

All ages welcome but under 18's must be in attendance with a parent or guardian.

Our courses in East Lothian run from Blinkbonny Wood, a 100 acre mixed canopy woodland, nestling on the edge of the Lammermuir Hills which provides easy access to hill and moor.

Approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh and 5 miles from the historic market town of Haddington.

It is close to Longyester, and therefore public transport to the area is easily achievable with international flights coming in to Edinburgh, as well as Edinburgh Waverley Train Station.

The canopy is a mixed patchwork with birch, hazel and scots pine a plenty. Gorse throws in its usual colours in the year and at the woodland boundaries there are stunning views of the hills in one direction, the coast in another, and bordering farmland.

Within our woodlands here you are likely to see Roe Deer, and we have regular sign of badger. There is also a variety of species of owl.

We operate weekend and day courses from this woodlands and occasional longer duration courses that require access to the hill side. We also offer private courses for schools, parties, stag dos etc.
