Family Bushcraft & Canoe Overnighter
Your family bushcraft and canoe experience starts at Priory Marina in Bedford, situated right next to the expansive Priory Country Park. You will be greeted by our friendly and experienced instructors for your introduction to the course.
Our location allows us the opportunity to provide you with a safe training environment within the marina before building your skills into a river journey over two days taking advantage of the unspoilt river Ouse and its surrounding
The first aim of the day is to familiarise you with your canoe, its design and safety features before taking you through how to pack it up for a multi-day trip. Here your bushcraft team are joined by the highly experienced and qualified canoeing instructors from Canoe Trail
, who will then guide you through basic paddle technique within the Marina to build your confidence in manoeuvring the craft.
Once everyone is happy we will depart from the Marina and strike out onto the gently flowing River Ouse. This is a guided trip and as such you will have access to experienced paddlers who know how to read the
river scape and will constantly have the safety of the group in mind.
Our destination is our woodland training venue on the banks of the Ouse around 3 hours away via leisurely paddling. We will look to break around midday on the river bank for a packed lunch, before continuing on your journey.During these hours on the
river you will have
first-hand experience in practising a variety of paddle techniques under the supervision of your instructor and will be introduced to some of the ecology and resources of the wetlands.
Upon arriving at our woodlands we will take you through a selection of bushcraft pursuits including making your camp for the evening using the traditional canvas bell tent excellently suited to this type of excursion. For those with a preference of light weight
camping you may bring your own tarps, or borrow from us.
No family bushcraft trip is complete without a fire and here you will be tutored in the art of the bow drill to successfully light a communal camp fire using this satisfying technique. With the fire established we can then turn our attention to preparing dinner where you will be expertly and respectfully guided through preparing game in the feather.
To finish the day we invite all to take part in some fun bushcraft related games. After a restful night under canvas and
tarp we will look at using the
ever versatile Dutch oven for one of its classic roles - a bread oven. We take you through managing a fire correctly for baking a perfect loaf for breakfast.
As is so often the case in bushcraft with one meal enjoyed its time to start preparing the next and so we turn our attention to lunch. Your second game prep session invites the group to help prepare for lunch.
To help in the preparation of lunch we will take you through some simple carving of cooking equipment using a general purpose bushcraft fixed blade knife.
After lunch and once camp is broken down its time to practice
re packing the canoes before launching for our last river section taking a couple of hours back to a pre-arranged pick up
point where the group will be met by our mini buses and transferred back to Priory Marina.
Please note there is a lower age limit of 8 years old. If you wish to bring younger children please contact us to discuss their individual arrangements.
