Primitive bow making weekend

We have been delivering bow making weekends at Woodland Ways for many years and now we are offering you the opportunity to join us in the woods to make a stone age flat bow utilising the very tools that would have been available to our ancestors when these incredible hunting tools were made and used.

This weekend course is running as a component part of our exclusive Primitive Skills Year course which looks at combining an exciting range of practical stone age skills in a sequential 10 module package.

Here we are offering you the extra choice of simply cherry picking a singular module of this longer duration course and creating for yourself a focused look at exactly the skills you may wish to cover.

You will by the end of the weekend have in your possession a functional flat bow with a natural fibre bow string and also a good foundation of utilising stone tools to shape wood. We will provide you with all the raw materials to make the bow and a range of flint tools for scraping, rasping, chopping and abrading your bow stave.

Our aim is to reveal just how effective these stone tools are and by using them side by side with modern conventional wood working tools of axe, knife and draw knife you have the opportunity to directly compare and contrast ancient with new.

The metal tools will ensure that your bow stave is reduced correctly and in good time, the flint will work wonders but it sure takes longer to get there! By combining tool material technologies we can ensure a fantastic learning opportunity and a
sucessful finish of your project within the weekend's time frame.

Your course begins 13:00 Friday where we introduce you to our woodland camp and give you to time to set up sleeping systems and orientate yourself to camp life. The first afternoon is dedicated to an overview of the course with examples of the type of bow you will be making as well as the stone age tool kit needed to design it.

We begin by rough shaping your bow stave on the first afternoon. The kettle is always close by for hot drinks and we will break each day around 12:00 and 18:00 for meals. Work will likely continue into the evening in keeping with our more specialist courses allowing you maximum opportunity for hands-on experience.

The Saturday is spent further refining your stave to achieve a symmetrical bend in the limbs either side of the handle - known as tillering. This cant be rushed and our instructors are there to guide you through this process and instil you with the confidence to problem solve whilst working wood.

Sunday is dedicated to finalising and smoothing down your flat bow and fitting it with a primitive bow string - no modern synthetics here we will be using twisted deer hide to create a long and very strong cord. We will also discuss other options for bow string manufacturer and other sources of workable fibre suitable for the job such as Lime bast and animal sinew.

This course promises to be an eye-opening look at the ingenuity of our distant ancestors and what they accomplished with the most modest of tool materials.

You will leave the course we hope not only with a working stone age bow but a new found or perhaps just heightened admiration for hunter-gatherer technologies and the woodland environment that you will have been a part of for the duration of the weekend.

If you have any questions about any of the above please do get in touch.
