Primitive shelter building weekend

After clothing, shelter is our foremost concern when out of doors and spending anything longer than a day exposed to the elements.

This weekend course is running as a component part of our exclusive Primitive Skills Year course which looks at combining an exciting range of practical stone-age skills in a sequential 10 module package.

Here we are offering you the extra choice of simply cherry picking a singular module of this longer duration course and creating for yourself a focused look at exactly the skills you may wish to cover.

To our stone age ancestors shelter must have been a continual life-shaping, decision-making process. The typical 'cave man' scene is exactly what that phrase conjures to the mind and we know that families occupied stone cavities for their dwellings. But what about when these caves were not available? What about when a family or hunting party needed to spend an extended period away from a permanent cave dwelling?

On this course you will learn how to manipulate the natural materials around you in our woodlands into simple yet incredibly effective shelters which you will have the opportunity to spend the night in. On your first evening you have the choice of using your own personal sleeping system or occupying our roundhouse all made from natural materials.

The second night will see you dwelling inside a nomadic style shelter of simple woven frame and animal skins.

We will operate out of our stunning Oxfordshire woodlands from a rustic woodland camp where there will always be a kettle on for hot drinks. We will break for meals at 12:00 and 18:00 but activities will likely continue into the evening in keeping with our more specialist weekends gaining you the maximum opportunity to get hands on experience.

Throughout this course our instructors will draw your attention to the incredible diversity of natural materials surrounding you that can be collected and pressed into service in keeping you warm and comfortable.

Whether you label yourself a primitive skills enthusiast or hard core survivalist this course has a lot to offer in the way of hard skills learnt through application and testing.

We will be looking at putting a roof over your head without the aid of any modern tarps, tents, hammocks and not 1cm of para-cord. When we say effective we mean exactly that and we hope to impress on you that 'primitive' does not mean second rate, these shelters are water proof, wind proof and warm.

Your comfort overnight will depend greatly on what is underneath you. For this reason we include on this course the gathering and processing of grass, reeds, sedges and just about any other prolific plant that can be bundled and bound into a luxuriously thick and insulating ground mat to sleep on.

If you have any questions on any of the above please do get in touch.
