Salmon Fish Skin Tanning Weekend Course

During this weekend course you will discover the amazing transformation of turning two Salmon skins into Leather (per person). This amazingly strong and versatile material can then be processed further on to items such as clothing, pouches, shoes and more.

Fish leather historically was commonly used in the circumpolar regions and the boreal zone due to its abundant availability and strength. Did you know that in Iceland it tanned Wolf fish shoes were so common that distances were sometimes measured in how many pairs of shoes you would use to make the journey!
 
Through your weekend you will discover 2 different processes of oil and veg tanning. Beginning with fleshing and descaling, scraping using both modern and ancient techniques, and degreasing.

We will also produce a number of tanning solutions from plants and bark before trying your hand at a number of softening techniques, before finally smoking your end product.

Please note this is a self catering course, you will need dinner on friday night, breakfast lunch and dinner for Saturday, and breakast on Sunday. You will have access to a fire to cook on, we would suggest a very simple and quick lunch with more time allowed round the fire for an evening meal.
