The River Tay Canoe Descent

The beautiful River Tay begins her life as a small spring on Ben Lui, 119 miles later she is Scotlands longest river as she emerges 2 miles wide flowing out to the North Sea.

En route she flows through some of Scotlands iconic scenery, heading east through the highlands, dropping south east through beautiful countryside before ultimately heading out via Perth to the sea. Carrying with her the largest volume of water of all rivers in the British Isles.

Home to an abundance of wildlife, including otter, beaver and of course its world renowned Salmon, not to mentioned sightings on the bankside or Roe and Red Deer, this paddling journey is a great immersion into the way of the canoe.

Jason is delighted to have teamed up again with his buddy Rich of Canoe Trails to offer this exceptional opportunity to join us as we navigate the river in our craft from Loch Tay, through Kenmore, Abefeldy, Grandtully, Dunkeld and on to Perth. Making camp each night on the banks of the river we will develop your existing canoe and camp craft skills with some great paddling on a traditional Scottish canoe journey, where we will share tips, hints, stories and bushcraft skills throughout.

Although no experience is required you will get more from the trip if you have been exposed to moving water before. We would recommend you attend our introductory days on the River Derwent at Matlock if you are a complete novice first (give us a call for a 10% discount off the introductory day if you book onto The River Tay Canoe Descent).

The water on the Tay will vary depending on flow but you can expect grades 2- 3 in places (Bouncy!), although we can portage the canoes it would be better if you had previous exposure to allow you to run them. The trip will be operated in both Solo and Tandem crafts subject to experience. For solos you must be able to maintain speed and control under moderate conditions, but don't let this put you off as there will be opportunities to try solo canoeing in places for those who are unsure.

Accommodation is provided and included on the evening of the 2nd and on the evening of the 8th, all other accommodation will be camping. You will need basic camping equipment. Evening meals are provided from the 3rd up to and including the last meal on the 8th, you will need to provide your own breakfasts and snack lunches.
