Traps and Trapping Weekend

Beginning at 13:00 on the Friday we will begin this course with an introduction to the subject of trapping and relaying it to the context of the American Frontier period. We will then begin an in-depth look at those traps designed for catching fowl and fish which would have been predominately for the intention of supplying meat for food to peoples living in remote areas.

Once we have lost the light we will break for dinner, after which there will be a discussion on the principles of trapping animals for food and fur with the advantages and disadvantages of trapping versus hunting. We shall also start to explore the historical evidence of trapping throughout the world, but with a specific focus on North America. During this discussion we will examine the cultural importance of the fur trade to the indigenous population and how this influenced their lives for over three hundred years. Reference will also be given to the many uses that the furs were put to once they were shipped back to American and European cities and how it was this market demand which played a key role in the exploration of a continent, putting Canada and the United States on the world map.

Saturday will begin with a look at the commercial traps commonly used by fur trappers to secure the most valuable pelts of the fur trade. From these we will spend the rest of the morning focusing on traps designed to suspend the prey with hands-on experiences gained throughout.

After a lunch break we will move on to looking at those traps that are designed to secure the target species from escaping and the benefits that these indigenous traps would have offered to trappers.

Around the camp fire that evening we will discuss the current UK law on trapping and snaring in full detail so that every customers leaves with a full appreciation of where the law stands on all traps covered during the course.

The final morning will be spent appreciating the second and equally important element of trapping. Reading the landscape, locating animal signs and interpreting where to locate traps.

All aspects of this module are for educational and training purpose only. NO traps will be actively set through the duration of the course and all UK legislation shall be complied with and thoroughly discussed throughout.
