Winter Wilderness - Tracking Croatia

** Due to the ongoing global pandemic this expedition has been temporarily postponed, we have pencilled dates for 2023 however we are honouring bookings from existing clients first. If you would like to go on a waiting list for this trip to be notified if it does go ahead and there is space please call the office and they will add you on **

Each year we invite five very lucky individuals to join us on an incredible journey into the snow capped mountains of Croatia, to track, record and monitor wildlife. The trip constitutes an incredible opportunity to further develop your tracking knowledge.

Here you will build on an existing knowledge of tracking, as we gather information on the track and sign of the area. This information is collated to further our understanding of predator/prey relationships in the area.

Our approach to this course needs to be flexible as we migrate to where the hot spots are. You may be staying in the foothills for a few days before transferring to a wilderness lodge for some very remote monitoring. Or you may be in the wilderness lodge for the whole duration!

The nature of the course is that you need to be prepared for anything, we will go where the Fauna Activity takes us. Everything you need will be carried in and out on your back.

You will be picked up from Zagreb airport on the morning of the 1stday and transported for approximately 2 hours to our first nights accommodation. Here we make ourselves comfortable in a local families house, where you will dine a traditional 3 course evening meal. The aims and objectives of the trip, safety aspects and tracking techniques will be outlined alongside an introduction to the Mountain Environment and its Fauna.

Starting in the foothills of Risnjak National Park you will be joined by one of our senior instructing team and local ranger, Miro. Over the last four years we have been working very closely with Miro supporting the parks service with donated camera equipment, and developing knowledge of the areas wildlife. Miro's understanding of the environment at this time of year is obviously very deep, and key to our success. From here the maps will come out, local hot spots identified, and we will plan our course of action.

This area is the most Mountainous and heavily forested region in the country, and there is a stunning array of Fauna for you to discover. Home to a number of Apex predators including Bear, Wolf and Lynx, alongside the movement of prey species across the snow line, we are looking to find, learn, and record behaviours of the Fauna we find.

We may be based within the family home for a few days exploring the area, but we may also leave immediately so be prepared. You will stay in a wilderness lodge guaranteed for a couple of nights... it may be more. You will also be given the opportunity to Summit Mount Risnjac should the conditions allow.

As you breath in deeply the fresh mountain air, your feet secure in snow shoes, we will be exploring up through the snow line and into the stunning mountains.

When based at the wilderness lodge we are on our own. The area is remote, very remote, and difficult to access at this time of year.

As we find our routines of melting snow for consumption, getting heat through the wood-burning stove, and setting out wildlife cameras you will be immersed into an incredible wilderness that very few people get to experience.

You can expect long days, and long nights, watching, interpreting, finding and recording all of the spore we find. We will be passing on our knowledge of the area's wildlife to you, and you will join us as we discover more.

Upon conclusion of our time in the area we will ultimately descend back down from the mountains where a full 3 course meal awaits to celebrate and reflect, before being transported back to the airport the following day.

The opportunity to spend time in this wilderness, in such a small group, at this time of year, learning tracking is a chance of a lifetime.

"I cannot thank Woodland Ways enough for the chance to go on this trip. Mount Risnjak in winter is breathtakingly beautiful and to be there with just 6 other fellow travellers was magical. Our days of following and analysing bear and other wild animal tracks; of melting snow to drink/cook with; sharing stories in the cabin at night around the wood-burning stove and gazing up in wonder at the night sky crammed with stars - was just so special.. Jason was a joy to be with - so knowledgeable and so at home in the Croatian wilderness. And the view from the top of Mount Risnjak is incredible and well worth the effort needed to climb it. I have very many happy memories of this trip. If you have the chance to go - then do it!"- Helen

Although we obviously cannot guarantee snow at all levels we have chosen a time of year which provides us with the highest chance. We are expecting snow cover of between 1 and 5 metres at the levels we will be operating within. In terms of temperatures we need to be prepared for anything in a range of +2 to -20 Degrees Celcius.

There are limited facilities within the Mountain Lodge. Toilets are provided although they may need to be flushed by hand with water from an underground source. There is no drinkable water and so all water to be consumed will come from melted snow or purified from a nearby source. Small amounts of electricity may be available from solar power. There are no showers or further washing facilities. Heat will be provided by a large wood burning stove of which all persons will be expected to manage. Your kit list is vital and must be adhered too. It is communal bunk bed accommodation although there is a side room if a couple does wish some privacy.

For the family home you will be provided with same sex shared accommodation.

For this trip you MUST be physically able to undertake the long walk in, and to sustain yourself in this environment. You do not have to be superman/superwoman however we would expect you to have a good level of physical stamina and endurance. Obviously due to the remote location and extreme temperatures that we may experience, medical concerns must be addressed with Woodland Ways Ltd prior to the trip.
