IOL Bushcraft Competency Training

Woodland Ways Training Course
Institute of Outdoor Learning Bushcraft Competency Certificate - Training.

This course is an Institute for Outdoor Learning Accredited Continual Professional Development Course and is designed for people who use/or wish to use bushcraft as an aide to delivering their own sessions at their own venues.
The training delivered on this course is designed to enable you to go for the IOL Bushcraft Competency Award should you wish. The training does however surpass the basic requirements of the award. Run over 3 days at one of our woodlands or at your own venue (through prior arrangement and dependent on a suitability assessment by Woodland Ways) you will be taught by some of the most knowledgeable instructors in the industry. Our instructional team have been approved by the Institute for Outdoor Learning for their high standards of quality and safety.

The syllabus covers all the components included in the IOL Bushcraft Competency Assessment plus additional supplementary topics to give the student a better grounding in basic bushcraft skills. After completion of the course students will agree with the instructors what further steps are required and the amount of consolidation that is needed to reach the assessment level.

Each topic will be described in detail, demonstrated and then students will get plenty of hands-on practical experience under the expert supervision of our instructors.

The course covers the following topics areas;

  • Woodland as a renewable resource
  • Tree identification and uses
  • Edged Tools - including cutting techniques, tool selection and maintenance, knife law

Alternatively we are happy to provide a list of local accommodation. The course is self-catering but drinking water for hot and cold beverages as well as tea and coffee is provided on each of the three days.

We would ask all potential candidates to please note: there is a huge interest in bushcraft over the last few years, which has seen companies springing up offering you misleading bushcraft "Qualifications". We would ask candidates to note that it takes a minimum 4 years training, sometimes more, to become a Woodland Ways Bushcraft Instructor. This IOL award does NOT constitute a Nationally Recognised Bushcraft Instructor's Qualification, there is NO such thing on the market, however what it does prove is personal competence to deliver safe and informative bushcraft sessions for example in outdoor centres or private courses of a short duration.
This course provides evidence to your employers, insurers and customers that you can deliver a basic bushcraft session safely and with an appropriate amount of knowledge and has become recognised as the benchmark for outdoor centres delivering basic bushcraft sessions (e.g. a 2 hour shelter building session for school children).
If you find yourself confused about what is available on the market to assist you in learning or teaching bushcraft then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly give you an honest review... or you could look at our WOODLAND WAYER COURSE, which is a highly comprehensive personal development course covering in depth a vast range of skills.

"I'm still grinning like a fool after an amazing weekend set in truly beautiful surroundings. Our instructor was just brilliant, a total gent who taught me more in one weekend than I could have ever thought possible. I wish there would have been teachers like him at school when I was a kid. My one and only regret about this course is not getting it booked years ago!"
    Curtis Robinson

"I couldn't recommend this course any more. A great split of information, practical skill and hands on learning. Genuinely felt able to ask questions and ask for additional support."
    Kai Mitton

    • East Lothian- Scotland

Our courses in East Lothian run from Blinkbonny Wood, a 100 acre mixed canopy woodland, nestling on the edge of the Lammermuir Hills which provides easy access to hill and moor.

Approximately 20 miles from Edinburgh and 5 miles from the historic market town of Haddington.

It is close to Longyester, and therefore public transport to the area is easily achievable with international flights coming in to Edinburgh, as well as Edinburgh Waverley Train Station.

The canopy is a mixed patchwork with birch, hazel and scots pine a plenty. Gorse throws in its usual colours in the year and at the woodland boundaries there are stunning views of the hills in one direction, the coast in another, and bordering farmland.

Within our woodlands here you are likely to see Roe Deer, and we have regular sign of badger. There is also a variety of species of owl.

We operate weekend and day courses from this woodlands and occasional longer duration courses that require access to the hill side. We also offer private courses for schools, parties, stag dos etc.
