Karesuando Boar Survival Knife with Antler Fire Steel

The Boar Survival knife is made in the Artic north of Swedish Lapland by Karesuando with a focus on functionality combined with traditional Nordic design.

The Blade is 10cm long, 2.4 cm wide and 3mm thick. It is made from high quality Sandvik 12C27 stainless "surgical" steel (HRC 57) sharpened with a flat Scandinavian grind.

The "spine" of the blade has slightly sharpened edges to make it suitable for use when striking a fire steel.  The blade extends with an internal tang that stretches approx 2.5" into the handle and is secured very firmly so that it wont come loose. Karesuando give this knife a life time guarantee.

The Handle is made from curly birch stained with a golden red/brown colour and also has a reindeer antler spacer.

The Sheath is side stitched and made from Swedish vegetable tanned cow hide leather. It has an inserted plastic sheath liner. It also features a loop for the fire steel.

The Fire steel is an "army" size (9.5mm in diameter) with a reindeer antler handle.

This knife is brilliant for hunting, fishing and forest activities. It is also suitable for carving and could be used in all kinds of outdoor activities such as survival exercises, bushcraft and camping.

What do our instructors think? Jo writes:

"We rate theses knives very highly. They are exceptional quality with a 10 year guarantee from Karesuando. They also come with a reindeer antler handled fire steel to complete the outfit..."

Advantages: Supplied with an army sized fire steel which works in all weathers, even straight out of water! It is easy to use and the temperature of the sparks will light natural tinders such as silver birch (Betula Pendula) bark and cramp balls ( Daldinea Concentrica). The spine of the knife has slightly sharpened edges to facilitate spark generation from the fire steel. Stainless steel blade therefore rust resistant and holds its edge a lot longer than carbon steel blades.

Disadvantages: We struggled with this to be honest, we rate these knives so highly!

I have just bought the Karesuando Boar knife. This knife is beautifully made and dealing with Woodland Ways was a great pleasure. I hope to do one of their courses soon.
